Kaikura - Swimming with Dolphins

There are many places in New Zealand where you can find wild marine life, and Dolphins and seals in particular, but Kaikura is probably the best place to aim at.
It is located in a meeting point of currents (give me a brake, look it up at your tourist guidebook), and so - diverse marine life is there in plantitude all year long. I felt so happy to swin with the Husky Dolphins in Kaikura. Known as specially friendly type of Doplhins, they swim in scores near the bay. We came near a group of some 400 (!!!) of them. They knew we are coming to swin with them and gathered around us, waiting for the first swimmers to jump into the water. Being wild as they are, it was us how had to try and interest them, fliping our hands and legs in the water, making funny noises and trying to get their attention. The few who managed to dive few meters into the waters and stay there for a while, got special enthusiastic feedback from the Dolphins. They swan around us, next to us and practically under our bellies. They play much like dogs play with man, running around us, looking into our eyes as if asking "are you into this game or just flipping your arms around?". They must ask themselves how can we be so slow and incompetent creatures (and I am sure my dog also sked herself this question sometimes when she waited for me to chase her). And they are REALLY fun to play with.

I recommend this experience. Not just chasing Doplhins (or Whales or Seals) in a boat, but actually jumping in the waters and having incredible time next to these amazing and intelligent creatures! Posted by Picasa
